“I’m an unconventional make-up artist.  If we all wore the same make-up, we would all have the same face.”

Anna Maria Negri

What country are you from and where do you live?

I was born and raised in Milan, Italy.

Title of what you do and what company you work with?

I’m a make-up artist represented by the Julian Watson Agency and Beauty Director of The Collector magazine.  I am also the Italian Brand Ambassador for Byredo Make-Up.  Since 2013, my husband Romano Brida and I co-founded the Bullfrog Barbershop Chain where I am the Brand Content Manager.

Education background (school, salons, self taught)?

As a pupil of Stefano Anselmo, I graduated in 1986 as a make-up artist at the BCM in Milan.  It was followed by several specialization courses including the special effects course for cinema by Kryolan at the Technische Universität of Berlin in 2004.

I received my instructor certification from MUD Make-Up Designory in 2015 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, which led me to teaching.

What is your signature style/artistic expression to your work?

I’m an unconventional make-up artist.  If we all wore the same make-up, we would all have the same face.  I like to see diversity and different interpretations of the same thing.

How did you get started as a makeup artist?

First collaborating at the Teatro alla Scala with the Russian director Andrej Končalovskij for the opera “La Dama di Picche” in 1986, before moving on to Fashion.  Initially, I was an assistant to Pat McGrath, Linda Cantello, Ellis Faas and Charlotte Tilbury (together with my friend Lucia Pica, now Global Creative Makeup & Color Designer for Byredo Make-up).  We worked on shows during fashion weeks and numerous red carpets in Rome, Venice , Cannes, London and Milan.

What is the first creative project that you remember?

In the beginning of my career I was doing makeup for a music video. There was never a lot of budget but a lot of creativity!  I curated the makeup of artists for Skin, Zoe Saldana, Adrien Brody, Eva Herzigova, Carla Bruni, Claudia Schiffer, Monica Bellucci, Boy George, Emma Thompson, Willem Dafoe, Robbie Williams, Alanis Morissette, Annie Lennox, Rose McGowan, Marilyn Manson , Georgia May Jagger, Elettra Rossellini, Duran Duran, Metallica and many others.

Do you have a career turning point or big break that has helped your career?

My career has been structured over time with hard work and dedication.  Building your reputation over the years is a slower but much more stable process.

What was your scariest and proudest moment in your career?

It was certainly the moment when I decided to have my son Leonardo.  As a freelancer it is always a risky career decision but the family always wins.

What is next for your career goals?

I want to have my own creative studio where photographers and glam teams can feel like home while they work.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in your business?

Work hard and always be positive, without complaining.   Heavy jobs are others!
