“When I do makeup, I try to invent characters and imagine a story for them, this helps me get more artistic in my designs and concepts.”
Marika D’Auteuil
Makeup Artist, Content Creator, and Global Educator
Education background (school, salons, self-taught)?
I am self-taught and have taken many masterclasses.
What is your signature style/artistic expression in your work?
I love everything fun, colorful, textured, and out-of-the-box. I love creating characters and thinking about a story when I create makeup looks as well as digital images.
What is the first creative project that you remember?
Before becoming a professional makeup artist, I would organize photoshoots as a teen to immortalize my makeup creations on myself. I loved elaborating on concepts and creating beautiful images.
What do you think of conceptualizing photo shoot ideas using AI?
I think it’s such a fantastic creative tool for artists. It’s practical both in terms of creating mood boards and in terms of successfully expressing what you have in mind clearly, without having to refer to other people’s visuals. It is a tool that can greatly facilitate communication within a team while stimulating creativity.
How do you feel AI is an extension of your artistry?
When I do makeup, I try to invent characters and imagine a story for them, this helps me get more artistic in my designs and concepts. So exploring the same approach with AI technology is just a logical sequence. It also gives me the opportunity to push the limits of my art even further. It inspires me to challenge myself on a conceptual and technical level.
What is the most fulfilling job you’ve worked on or a person you have worked with?
I get to travel the world to teach master classes. Helping other artists push their limits and develop their creative side is one of the most rewarding things I’ve done in my life.
Do you have a career turning point, big break, or person that has helped your career?
I got the opportunity to travel to Fashion Week and work backstage alongside some of the best artists in the industry, I think it really made it clear in my head at that moment, that there was nothing that could stop me.
What was the scariest and proudest moment in your career?
Doing a live makeup demo in front of some of my ultimate makeup idols a few years ago. I felt like I didn’t belong and I was an imposter. It went extremely well and I am now friends with most of these people.
What is next for your career goals?
I really don’t know. Maybe a big cover like Vogue or something. But as long as I keep traveling and doing what I love, everything will be fine.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in your business? Be curious. Try new things, fail, and understand why you did. Start again. Never stop. That’s how you grow.
