“Makeup isn’t just about transforming a person completely; it’s about enhancing and recognizing the living canvas you’re painting on.”
What country are you from and where do you live?
I was born in Canada. My parents are from South Korea. I live in Toronto/Barbados.
Title of what you do and what company you work with?
I am a professional freelance makeup artist and on-camera beauty expert. I provide makeup, hairstyling, and consulting services on location. I appear regularly on CTV’s The Marilyn Denis Show, as well as other talk shows in Canada.
Education background (Hair school, art school, no school)?
I have a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto (English Literature specialist); a certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Toronto; and a certificate in Professional Makeup from George Brown College. I have private training in Fine Art.
What is your signature style/artistic expression to your work?
My signature style includes respecting effortless inherent beauty, whether in original works of fashion, everyday life, celebrity, or special effects. Makeup isn’t just about transforming a person completely; it’s about enhancing and recognizing the living canvas you’re painting on.
Do you have a career turning point or big break that has helped your career?
Appearing on CBC’s The Steven and Chris Show soon after graduating makeup school launched my career and fast-tracked my professional credibility and ambition.
What was your scariest and proudest moment in your career?
The scariest and proudest moment in my career was my very first on-air beauty segment/TV episode. The show was my audition, and I knew that it was a crucial moment. Ten years later, I’m proud to say that I’m still on TV, and still in love with my job.
What is next for your career goals?
I would love to launch my own makeup brand; write a book (or two); and host my own television show.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in your business?
Be fiercely persistent and hard-working above all. Continually learn, and feed your craft. Always be open-minded and flexible, and don’t be overly sensitive when receiving professional feedback. Be exceptional at what you do – your best job security is being the absolute best at being you.
