“My strength is ethnic hair, but put any other textures in front of me I’m able to seal it with my touch.”
Adrian Carew
What country are you from and where do you live ?
I’m from Barbados, a Bajan (short for Barbadian) now living in Toronto, Canada.
Title of what you do and what company you work with?
I’m a Hairstylist who enjoys creating beauty with hair. Hair 91 Inc is where I call home.
Education background (Hair school, art school, no school)?
I attended Marvel Beauty School in Yorkville Toronto in the 80’s. My family would always say I was born to do this as they watched me grow up. Hairstyling is in my blood. I was first introduced to this fabulous world by my mom, a hairdresser who took it by the horns and was excellent at it. She was a well known hairdresser in Barbados. She was known as one of the best. I looked at it as my mom’s world, her thing, not knowing it would be mine. Destiny had a path for me and as I veered away from it I was drawn right back. Look at me now, in it to win it.
What is your signature style/artistic expression to your work?
Hairstyling is my signature style. To be asked about being specific, this is hard. I enjoy being able to create and seeing my work compliment a look. My strength is ethnic hair, but put any other textures in front of me I’m able to seal it with my touch. I enjoy building pieces, and sculpting looks for fashion shoots, television or movie sets. Session work, I love. This world has led me to being a personal stylist in media and in the musical world. For hair competitions I get to show how creative I can be. I love HAIR!
Do you have a career turning point or big break that has helped your career? What was your scariest and proudest moment in your career?
Winning the Revlon Style Masters in 2015 was a turning point. I was chosen to be top nine in the world resulted in representing Canada in Rome. What a career honour that was. In the fashion world l shared the Spring/Summer hair projections featured in Italian Vogue (#Vogueblack) in 2013. In 2019, I worked with Givenchy at the 10th anniversary show in New York as well as the Givenchy feature in Vanity Fair France. I did international fashion shows for Chanel, Zac Posen and Marc Jacobs and have been the key hair stylist for Canada’s superstar fashion house Greta Constantine.
Scariest …Opening my own Salon in 2004 not knowing what I was about to be faced with venturing into the unknown. I jumped in and ran with it.
Proudest moment was being recognized world wide for my work in 2015 and 2016 by winning the Revlon Style Masters back to back.
What is next for your career goals?
I would like to continue to be better at my craft, become number one and to be able to share it with the world. I need to be a household name ”ADRIAN”.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in your business?
You are joining a profession that stands with high regard. Never think that you know it all. Be open to learning and don’t be afraid to ask for help. I still do! Always give 110% of whatever you do. Soak it all up.
