“Nearly everything is made in my studio, from the printing of the TPU to the hand-wound springs to the embossed packaging. I really do care about quality and offering people something they have never seen before in a functional durable package, and I hope my work reflects that.”
Adjective Design uses 3D Print Spine Design for Hair Accessories
Beauty Hub Magazine asked 3D print Avant Garde designer Jonathan from Vancouver, Canada about his concept behind Adjective Design
“The idea came to me when I was studying Kinesiology, probably after a sleepless night studying. I found some open source medical archives (Life Sciences Japan, BodyParts3D) that I had used to study and would later use to design the Spinal Hair Clip. After graduating, I worked as a Personal Trainer whilst spending my free time learning CAD modelling, mechanical design, and 3D printing. I am a very visual thinker and had been into fashion for some years before so I wanted to bring my ideas to life. I spent over a year learning and prototyping, the Spinal Hair Clip being my first real completed project. I love how this project brings my Kinesiology background and merges it with fashion to make a hair clip look like an “exo-skeleton-like extension of one’s spine”. There are many other items I would like to create and some are already in the works.”
“My design philosophy is to make things (mainly accessories) that are avante-garde, functional, and durable. So, the body material is thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), a tough material that is often used in phone cases and boot soles and the metal hardware is made with Stainless Steel for rust prevention. I designed the unique dual-axis mechanism with quad springs, which allows the side wings to move freely and exert even pressure without interfering with the spinous processes in the back. This allows the hairclip to be used like any standard hair clip despite the hair clip body being 3 pieces with 4 springs and looking like a spine.”
