“How I went from painting such a huge canvas to such a small one, I’ll never know!”
I live in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada.
Title of what you do and the company you work with?
Nail Artist/Nail’d It by Alyssa.
Education background (Hair school, art school, no school)?
I went to Gina’s College of Advanced Aesthetics for the full aesthetic program, which took about eight months to complete. I took regular art classes throughout high school. I painted the schools stage backdrop for four years. How I went from painting such a huge canvas to such a small one, I’ll never know!
What is your signature style/artistic expression?
My signature style is probably negative space abstract. Crisp line work on a sheer base is my major kink though. And lots of colour!
What was your career turning point/your big break?
My career turning point was when I stopped working in salons and went out on my own. They held me back and didn’t fully support the artistic direction that I (personally) wanted to go. As for the “big break”… I wouldn’t say I’ve had a big break. I’ve worked extremely hard over the last six years and I have had to make sacrifices to build and grow my brand/company. It really comes down to hard work, dedication, persistence and an obsession/love for my craft.
What was your scariest and proudest moment in your career?
One of the scariest things for me is putting myself out there. It’s scary to share things with a large following of people when you only know a very small fraction of them on a personal level. As for the proudest, oddly enough, I think it was when I hit 10k on IG last November. It’s pretty silly but the first ten thousand were the toughest. I worked really hard for that milestone lol.
What is next for your career goals?
In the future I think I’d like to potentially start offering workshops or maybe online courses.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in your business?
Just be consistent. Patient. Work hard. Be creative and don’t be afraid to try new things. Don’t compare your day one with someone else’s year ten.
