“My big break was becoming a cosmetologist. My dreams of who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do with my life have happened and continue to happen as I grow myself and my skill set. I found myself, my purpose in life and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” – Anthony Montoya
Anthony Montoya
What country are you from, and where do you reside?
I am from and reside in the United States, born and raised in Los Angeles, California.
Title of what you do and if you are aligned with a brand or company.
I’m an Editorial Hairstylist/ Educator for Beauty By Imagination. I represent brands such as Bioionic, Ouidad and The Wet Brush.
Education background (school, salons, self-taught)?
I was licensed in my state through an apprenticeship program. Everything I’ve learned has been through mentorship from salon owners & senior stylists I would assist, all on the job, my preferred way to learn.
What is the first creative project that you remember?
I was assisting my mentor on a fashion shoot and received my first publication in Factice Magazine. I was bit by the bug and have pursued a career in styling hair fashion ever since.
What is your signature style/artistic expression of your work?
Editorial hair styling for fashion magazines is my passion. I enjoy working with all hair patterns but have a soft spot for curls and coils.
What is the most fulfilling job you’ve worked on or someone you have worked with?
Having the opportunity to work with Nick Berardi is a dream come true. His talent, knowledge, and passion are admirable. To have been in this business and evolve your creativity the way he has is how one thrives in this industry.
Do you have a career turning point, big break, or person who has helped your career?
My big break was becoming a cosmetologist. My dreams of who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do with my life have happened and continue to happen as I grow myself and my skill set. I found myself, my purpose in life and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
What was the scariest and proudest moment in your career?
The scariest moment was exposing myself and my art to the world for my peers to judge, but simultaneously, it was the proudest moment because on the other side of that fear was glory. If you keep creating, eventually, you’ll find your rhythm and produce some of the most beautiful works you’ve ever imagined you’d create.
What is next for your career goals?
Next, I’ll be looking for representation from an agency to start working on commercial projects and work my way to styling hair for NYFW.
What advice would you give to someone starting your business?
Not all that glitters is gold, so make sure you love what you do and never give up on yourself. It’s not about the end result; it’s about the journey.
