On NYFW Day 2, under the creative direction of celebrity/editorial stylist and Back of Bottle Ambassador, Peter Gray, with a team of 20+ Back of Bottle salon and editorial artists from across the nation created a timeless, sleek, and sophisticated ‘regal knotted ponytail’ for the Fall 2024 Ready-to-Wear Badgley Mischka presentation. ‘The Badgley Mischka team was looking for something that was absolutely precise and the epitome of understated elegance to complement their collection, said Gray.’
The curated ‘regal knotted ponytail’ marries the BOB styling team’s artistry and craftsmanship which are paramount for the brand; the hair look was intentionally curated with Back of Bottle products to compliment the craftsmanship in the collection. ‘The inspiration was taken from belt knots on the dresses designed by Mark and James. The reflective shine of the hair’s surface was also inspired by the luxury fabrics the designers used, said Gray.’ The collection featured retro glamour evening wear inclusive of signature cocktail dresses, gowns, and suites with muted color palettes embellished with metallics and jewel tones.
The makeup by Mary Irwin was about Moody Blues, with a touch of Twiggy. The look was inspired by classic Twiggy makeup but modernized with placement and color.

How-to: Recreate the Badgley Mischka ‘Regal Knotted Ponytail’ by Celebrity Editorial Artist Peter Gray
Step 1: Prep The Hair
For the ‘Regal Knotted Ponytail’ you can start with clean, wet hair, or dry hair. For either, be sure to brush hair thouroughly to ensure hair is free of any knots and tangles as this look works best with a smooth base. If you need to blow dry hair to create a sleeker base, be sure to apply Hi-Hydrating Moisturizing Oil (2-4 drops to scalp or as desired). Apply Shining Armor Frizz & Heat Primer, a lightweight, silicone-free styling primer that helps protect hair while heat styling for added frizz control and definition before blow drying.
Step 2: Styling
Select the desired parting and begin to comb/brush hair backwards behind ears and towards the nape. To achieve a chic and sculpted look, comb/brush hair while flattening each side.
Step 3: Apply Free Rein Curl Cream
A backcombing brush will help you achieve a sleek finish if you are having trouble brushing the hair back. It is possible that the soft bristles will smooth back the hair and evenly distribute the product without leaving bumps. Warm a small amount of Free Rein Curl Cream in your palms and smooth the surface of the hair for added control when pulling the hair back. Make sure you do not use excessive amounts at first; you can always add more if necessary.
Step 4: Pull Hair Back
Once the part is defined, pull hair tightly back at the base of the neck; be sure to smooth out any kinks or gapping in the hair. Run your comb or brush from front to back of hair and use dress making elastics to secure the hair in a ponytail. Once the placement is secured, use the tail of the comb, and place the entire ponytail vertically and push against the nape of the head. Using a large embroidery needle, now stitch the same dress making elastic and stitch the length of the ponytail to the base of the ponytail sewing it into the ponytail.
Step 5: Final Touches
Use Hold On Hairspray or Grip & Grace Texture Finishing Spray to hold the hair in place and smooth away any flyaways and secure the look. For bonus shine, take a Color Space hair painting brush and paint on shine lines with Hi-Hydrating Moisturizing Oil.
