CAMILLE & STEPHANIE, 19/99 BEAUTY FOUNDERS – TORONTO, ON

How we look at beauty is changing. What is appropriate for our age, our position, or status, is in flux. We may have as much in common with our mothers as with our younger sisters (or fathers and younger brothers). We deserve a more open and multi-generational dialogue about what beauty looks like at all stages of our lives, from ages 19 to 99.

We are seeing the word ‘flux’ go beyond personal boundaries. Everything is now in ‘flux’, from supply chains, to sales channels, consumer habits, and beyond. While what is happening in the world is devastating, we are also seeing a shift in what we as a society truly value. As a new beauty brand, our hope is to be able to use this time to rethink what beauty is all about.

A sustainable supply chain, quality over quantity, minimal packaging and waste, and not defining rules of what beauty should look like has always been important to us. We built this brand before the entire world was in flux, with the intention of reshaping how we look at beauty.

We create unprescribed beauty essentials for building, blending, buffing, smudging, and doing what you want. Makeup is an embellishment, an accessory, and above all, temporary. We embrace and find beauty in the smears, strokes, creases, and the time spent with ourselves to ‘touch up’.

19/99 Beauty launched in April 2020 with two products: Precision Colour Pencil in shade ‘Voros’ and High-Shine Gloss in shade ‘Glass’. Toronto Makeup Artist Simone Otis worked closely with brand founders Stephanie Spence and Camille Katona to develop these two high- performance beauty essentials that are easy to use, and can be used together or individually. In June 2020, 19/99 Beauty launched a second shade of the Precision Colour Pencil, ‘Neutra’ – a universal neutral.

The Precision Colour Pencil ($26) is inspired by the classic artist’s tool, a wooden pencil. A pencil is the ideal format for added definition on eyes and lips, and our bendable formula allows for versatile application on all areas of the face. ‘Voros’ and ‘Neutra’ works with all skin tones, and stages of life. Brush onto lips, eyes, and cheeks for a soft, monochromatic look, or use to create a bold lip or liner. Use with the Precision Pencil Sharpener ($6) for the perfect, pointed tip.

High-Shine Gloss ($24) is designed to add dewy, ‘I just applied my skin care’ shine to lips, eyes, and cheeks. This translucent gloss, complemented with subtle, light- reflecting pearl, creates radiance on all skin tones. Use fingertips to dab onto lips, cheekbones, eyelids, or blend with Precision Colour Pencil for diffused colour and added shine.
