“I love working on texture. I think it’s important for a hairstylist to be versed in all hair types and clients/ models of all ethnicities. I really thrive in editorial and runway work.”
Lisa Vann
What country are you from, and where do you reside?
Seattle, Washington, United States
Title of what you do and if you are aligned with a brand or company.
Award-winning international Stylist, Salon and Spa Owner, Educator, and Global Ambassador for Insight Professional
Educational background (school, salons, self-taught)?
Beauty School, internship.
What is the first creative project that you remember?
1993 Aveda Congress with my mentor Horst Rechelbacher presenting texture.
What is the signature style/artistic expression of your work?
I love working on texture. I think it’s important for a hairstylist to be versed in all hair types and clients/ models of all ethnicities. I really thrive in editorial and runway work. I love keeping up with the latest fashion trends on the runway, especially Paris Fashion Week. I really enjoy being a creative lead, big hair pieces, and anything innovative to achieve texture. I love to think outside the box.
What is the most fulfilling job you’ve worked on or someone you have worked with?
The work I do educating is what I find the most rewarding. The apprenticeship program in my studio is important to me. I want to give back to the new generation of stylists and give them the opportunity to afford school and learn techniques with actual on-the-job training.
Do you have a career turning point, big break, or person who has helped your career?
Looking back, Antoinette Beenders helped shape my career. I spent over a decade travelling and learning from her. I grew as a stylist, educator, and leader in a way I did not know I could be until I looked back on it.
What was the scariest and proudest moment in your career?
During the pandemic, small businesses closed around me in downtown Seattle, and it took a lot of persistence to keep my salon going during and after the pandemic. I am proud that I continued to show up daily and find ways to maintain the business, support clients and my staff, and stay busy even when it wasn’t easy.
What is next for your career goals?
I would one day like to open a studio for hairstylists where they can create editorials working with local artists, designers, and photographers.
What advice would you give to someone starting your business?
A lot of my opportunities came from always being willing to say yes. I would tell anyone starting out in the business that the long days and nights eventually become worth it when you make strong connections with people in the industry. By just showing up, keeping a good attitude, and always having a “can-do” demeanor, people will remember that and enjoy working with you. I love what I do; I think that is important in this field.
