Mastectomy Tattoo Artist Creates Lasting Symbols of Hope and Survival

David Allen’s work, began over 15 years ago when decorative mastectomy tattoos were virtually unheard of, has transformed the lives of so many women. The stories that David and his clients have shared with the Co:Create team have inspired them to learn more about the painstaking process of designing each individual tattoo, the meaning it holds for survivors, and the work they can do ongoing to make the whole process as problem-free and accessible as possible. David’s journey into this work began in 2010 when a client, Adriana, approached him to cover the scar across her chest. Adriana was 10 years post cancer, but tired of looking in the mirror every day and being reminded of cancer. She had a vision in her head of the tattoo and knew she wanted to find the right artist who could deliver the piece.

After some research, she found David, and knew he was the perfect artist for the job. David was reluctant at first given the sensitive nature of the work and the state of the skin. But after a few conversations, David decided to perform the tattoo and help her heal, both physically and emotionally. There was an instant connection between Adriana and David. Adriana gave David permission to share some photos of the tattoo which gained widespread recognition – since then David has performed over 300 mastectomy tattoos for women.

David Allen’s impact on the lives of breast cancer survivors is rooted in empathy, compassion, and the understanding that every woman’s story matters. Each tattoo he creates is a reflection of that story—turning scars that symbolize pain and survival into something beautiful and empowering. This act of healing through art has become David’s life’s work. He spends hours with each woman, listening to her journey, understanding her fears, and sharing in her hopes for the future.

For many women, these tattoos mark the final step in their healing journey. Co:Create and David Allen are honored to come together to champion these women with this partnership this month. We would love for you to share this with your audience and help us bring attention to this important and growing art form that brings healing and empowerment to breast cancer survivors.

Allen invited women to share their stories and submit their interest in a mastectomy tattoo, for the chance to be included in an initiative. Together, they will share David’s journey of working with hundreds of women, all with the shared goal of making mastectomy tattoos more accessible and understood, one tattoo at a time.
