“Never lose the passion and desire to achieve, as the only thing holding you back is you.”
Stevan Dulay
What country are you from, and where do you reside?
UK, Scotland, based in Glasgow’s Westend
Title of what you do and what company you work with.
Owner & Creative Director of POMOhair
Education background (school, salons, self-taught)?
As a self-taught artist from a young age, I was keenly interested in all things colour and shapes; after successfully commissioned paintings over time, I turned my hand to creating hair art. By turning my brushes into scissors and sculpting hair, I could make a mark on the industry with bold designs and alluring colour pallets. With this in mind, I joined the Saks education program, and after extensive training and experience, it was time to bring my hairdressing brand to the industry from which POMOhair was born.
What is the first creative project that you remember?
In 2012, opening my salon in the West End of Glasgow, Partick, was my first creative project. I wanted to develop a space full of creativity that produced professional standards, expert quality and on-trend vision daily. To do this, I set out a 10-year plan in three phases. The first phase was to build our brand pillars (professional, expert & on trend) and a client base. The second phase was to affiliate ourselves with a market leader, and this brought along the KAO Salon Division. Joining this amazing group, I knew I had a partner with the same goals and outlook as myself and more importantly, with the Global Creative Awards, I would now have a platform to showcase my talents. Now that I had all this in place, phase three was achievable by our 10th year. In 2022, I wanted to enter and test my ability against the best hair artists KAO has to offer.
What is your signature style/artistic expression of your work?
I have always been influenced by face shape and bone structure, driven by my time painting. Another aspect of interest to me is architecture and graphic designs for forming lines and solid shapes. This combination of influences steers me towards creating bold shapes with strong lines. I enjoy creating contrast internally with texture and movement while keeping an external solid structure.
What is the most fulfilling job you’ve worked on or someone you have worked with?
I would have to say the most fulfilling job I’ve worked on has to be my business and brand POMOhair; developing a thriving client base that supports me shows massive loyalty and makes me very proud. My amazing clients are the catalyst that’s helped propel me to where I am today. Along this journey, joining the KAO Salon Division, I’ve had the pleasure and support of working alongside great mentors such as Beverly C MBE, Toni Perryman and the super talented Richard Miles Photography. From all the above, I have learned and developed as a stylist while building a great friendship with each person that will last a lifetime.
Do you have a career turning point, big break, or person that has helped your career?
As far as my career, I feel I have been working very hard over the past 11 years on an upward trajectory with my business, partnership with the KAO Salon Division, the global awards and I have, over the last two years, won gold nationally and now globally I genuinely feel this is the true beginning of so much more to come from myself along with the KAO salon family support.
What was the scariest and proudest moment in your career?
The proudest moment will always be my first major award in 2022, when I won the national UK Creative Colourist Gold. Not only was this the final piece of my 10-year business plan, but it was my first-ever competition entry, and I won! This gave me the belief that I had no limits and nothing was unachievable, and to reinforce that, I backed my national 2022 gold the following year with my recent 2023 Global gold!
What is next for your career goals?
I have always maintained that I must constantly challenge myself and show progression; having done that with my national award followed by a global prize, I will look to push the high standards we aim for in the salon daily, exploit all mentor or education opportunities offered via KAO Salon Division and my in-salon education programs. I am genuinely very open and excited to see what comes next.
What advice would you give to someone starting your business?
I enjoy the art of the job. Every day, you learn to be motivated and determined at all times. Never lose the passion and desire to achieve, as the only thing holding you back is you.
