“I made a hairstyle using a model’s hair mixed with cutting paper in a Japanese hair competition in which I won first prize.”
Takuya Yamaguchi
What country are you from and where do you live?
I’m from Japan and I have been in NY for seven years.
Title of what you do and what company you work with?
I am a freelance session hair stylist.
What is your education background (school, salons, self taught)?
After working in a hair salon for 15 years in Tokyo, I moved to NY in 2014 and worked as a full time assistant for AKKI (Art Partner), and Peter Gray (Home agency). Now I have been working as an independent hair stylist since 2018.
What is your signature style/artistic expression to your work?
Making hairstyles using everyday materials such as paper, cans, glasses, snacks, and vegetables etc.. with my original mannequin head. But my favorite style is natural hair with human hair.
What is the first creative project that you remember?
I made a hairstyle using a model’s hair mixed with cutting paper in a Japanese hair competition in which I won first prize.
What is the most fulfilling collaboration you’ve worked on?
Vogue Hong Kong – May 2021. I used some short hair wigs on one model. I think that was my best work so far.
Do you have a career turning point or big break that has helped your career?
Moving to NY was my turning point. Which made me towards the fashion/beauty industry as a session hair stylist.
What was your scariest and proudest moment in your career?
I worked as the first assistant for AKKI’s hair team for the Victoria’s Secret show in London 2014. I couldn’t speak English at the time, but there were so many top models and I had to do their hair – it was kind of a big pressure for me. I managed to get through it without a problem. So I felt that my long time preparations for a bunch of hair extensions and hair products, model’s hair research, and interaction with sponsors etc – were rewarded. At the same time I was proud of it.
What is next for your career goals?
Publishing my hair photo book. I’m working on it now.
What advice would you give to someone starting out in your business?
Never give up until you reach your goal !
